The true cost of Akeneo Community

Akeneo Community is “free” in terms of the licence. But for production use, you need to factor in:

  • Server— Akeneo requires PHP 8.1+, MySQL 8+, Elasticsearch 8+, Redis. A decent server for 50,000 products costs €200–500/month on OVH or AWS.
  • Installation and configuration— allow 2–5 developer days for a clean installation with the correct performance settings.
  • Maintenance— updates, backups, monitoring, incident management. If you outsource this, expect to pay €500–1,000 per month.
  • Plugins— connectors to Amazon, Shopify, Mirakl, etc. are available via the Akeneo marketplace (paid) or require specific development work.

In total, an operational Akeneo Community instance often costs €1,500–3,000 per month in total costs (server + maintenance + plugins), not including in-house developer time.

When Akeneo Community is the right choice

Akeneo Community makes sense in these situations:

  • You have an in-house technical team capable of installing, maintaining and upgrading a PHP/Symfony application
  • You have very specific customisation requirements that only open-source code can meet (extensive modifications to the data model, bespoke integrations)
  • You have data sovereignty constraints that preclude any cloud SaaS (public sector, defence, healthcare)
  • You have a very large product volume (500,000+) which makes SaaS plans disproportionate compared to the cost of self-hosting

When ProductsManager Free is the right choice

ProductsManager Free is suitable if:

  • You’re just starting out and want to try a PIM without any initial technical investment (0 dev, 0 servers)
  • You have fewer than 2,000 products and are looking to organise your catalogue, import manually and distribute to 1 channel
  • You are an SME without a dedicated IT team and want to focus on your catalogue, not on the infrastructure
  • You want to evaluate a PIM before upgrading to a paid plan with automated imports

The real question: build or buy?

The choice between Akeneo Community and ProductsManager (or any other SaaS PIM) is above all a trade-off between maximum control (open source, self-hosted) and speed/simplicity (SaaS, up and running in minutes).

For the majority of distributors and importers who want to focus on their core business rather than their IT infrastructure, SaaS is the right choice. For large enterprises with advanced customisation requirements and an IT department capable of maintaining an on-premise PIM, open source remains a viable option.

ProductsManager Free allows you to try out the SaaS approach with no commitment — and to switch to a paid plan as your catalogue grows.
